Geography & context
Sefrou (صفرو) is a historic town of the Middle Atlas, south of Fès, in the Fès-Meknès region. Located at roughly 33.83° north latitude and 4.83° west longitude, at about 850 metres of altitude at the foot of the mountains, it has a continental climate: cool winters, hot summers. Famous for its cherry festival, one of the oldest in Morocco, and for its medina crossed by the Aggaï river, Sefrou sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Sefrou is an old town, once a caravan stop towards the Tafilalet and an important centre of coexistence, with one of the oldest mellahs (Jewish quarters) in Morocco. Its medina, ramparts and waterfalls testify to a rich past. The cherry festival, held since the 1920s, is its symbol. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Sefrou
Religious life in Sefrou sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by the mosques of the medina and the districts. The Friday prayer brings together a population attached to its heritage. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the name of the Prophet's companions, such as Anas ibn Malik, a faithful servant and great transmitter of hadith.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Sefrou follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 850 metres and the latitude (~33.8° N) give Sefrou prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The first Middle Atlas relief to the south frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
