Geography & context
Selouane (سلوان) is a town of the Oriental region (province of Nador), just south of Nador, near the Marchica lagoon. Located at roughly 35.07° north latitude and 2.94° west longitude, in the Bou Areg plain, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild winters, hot summers. An industrial and agricultural satellite town of Nador, in Rif country, Selouane sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Selouane is a town of the Bou Areg plain, south of Nador, marked by the history of the Rif: a kasbah there keeps the memory of the campaigns of the early 20th century. Today a satellite of Nador, it blends industrial and agricultural activities. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a Rifian Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Selouane
Religious life in Selouane combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. A network of neighbourhood mosques — several named 'tamezgida' in Rifian — sets the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together workers, farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke paradise (Al-Firdaous) or abundance (Al-Kaoutar).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Selouane follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.1° N) give Selouane prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:00 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. Located in the far north-east, the town has some of the earliest sunrises and sunsets in the country. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
