Geography & context
Tafoughalt (تافوغالت), or Taforalt, is a small mountain town of the Beni Snassen, in the Oriental region (province of Berkane). Located at roughly 34.81° north latitude and 2.41° west longitude, at mid-altitude amid forests and caves, it has a mountain climate: cool winters, mild summers. Famous for the Cave of Pigeons, a major prehistoric site, Tafoughalt sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tafoughalt is a mountain village of the Beni Snassen massif, world-famous among prehistorians for the Cave of Pigeons, which has yielded some of the oldest burials and ornaments in the world. Surrounded by forests and springs, the locality is Amazigh (Beni Snassen). Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Tafoughalt
Religious life in Tafoughalt combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Beni Snassen. The mosques of the village and the douars — several named 'tamezgida' — set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and mountain villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tafoughalt follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~34.8° N), the Beni Snassen altitude and the eastern position give Tafoughalt prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The wooded Beni Snassen relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
