Geography & context
Tamesloht (تامصلوحت) is a small town south-west of Marrakech, in the Marrakech-Safi region (province of Al Haouz). Located at roughly 31.49° north latitude and 8.10° west longitude, in the Haouz plain, it has a semi-arid climate: scorching summers, mild winters. Renowned for its historic zawiya and its crafts (pottery, tanning), Tamesloht sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Tamesloht is famous for its zawiya, an important religious brotherhood founded around a venerated saint, which held sway over the Haouz region. The town is also known for its potters and tanners. This religious and craft past still marks its identity. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, tinged with the Sufi tradition.
Religious life in Tamesluht
Religious life in Tamesloht is marked by its zawiya and the town's mosques, in the Maliki and Sufi tradition of the Haouz. The main mosque, with a kuttab (Quranic school), and the shrine set the rhythm of religious life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and craftsmen. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tamesloht follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.5° N) gives Tamesloht prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Haouz plain offers an open horizon towards the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
