Geography & context
Taounate (تاونات) is a town in the hills of the pre-Rif, a provincial seat in the Fès-Meknès region, north of Fès. Located at roughly 34.54° north latitude and 4.64° west longitude, at about 650 metres of altitude above the Ouergha valley, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. The heart of an olive-growing region and near the great Al Wahda dam, Taounate sees its fairly high latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Taounate is the centre of an agricultural region of the pre-Rif, renowned for its olive trees and its oil, overlooking the Ouergha valley where the Al Wahda dam — one of the largest in Africa — extends. The town is also home to a zawiya of the Tijaniyya brotherhood, a sign of the region's Sufi rootedness. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Taounat
Religious life in Taounate sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, tinged with the influence of Sufi brotherhoods such as the Tijaniyya, present through its local zawiya. The grand mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques set the rhythm of religious life. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Taounate follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The fairly high latitude (~34.5° N) and the hill altitude give Taounate prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The pre-Rif hills frame the horizon above the Ouergha valley. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
