Geography & context
Tassoultante (تسلطانت) is a rural commune on the southern outskirts of Marrakech, in the Marrakech-Safi region (province of Al Haouz). Located at roughly 31.55° north latitude and 8.00° west longitude, in the Haouz plain between the ochre city and the High Atlas, it has a semi-arid climate: scorching summers, mild winters. A rapidly expanding zone at the gates of Marrakech, Tassoultante sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Tassoultante, long an agricultural commune of the Haouz south of Marrakech, is undergoing development tied to the expansion of the conurbation and to new residential and tourist projects towards the Atlas. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Tassoultante
Religious life in Tassoultante sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Haouz, carried by the mosques of the douars and the new districts. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. One mosque bears the name Al-Kheir (goodness).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tassoultante follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.5° N) gives Tassoultante prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, close to those of Marrakech. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Haouz plain opens towards the High Atlas to the south. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
