Geography & context
Tendrara (تندرارة) is a small town of the high plateaus of the Oriental, in the province of Figuig, at the heart of the grazing steppes. Located at roughly 33.05° north latitude and 2.00° west longitude, at mid-altitude in a semi-desert zone, it has an arid continental climate: cold winters, very hot summers. A pastoral centre of the high plateaus, Tendrara sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tendrara is a town of the high plateaus of the Oriental, a land of vast sheep-grazing ranges. Long a pastoral locality, it is seeing renewed interest linked to the discovery of gas resources in its region. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Tindrara
Religious life in Tendrara sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the central mosque and the neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together herders and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. One mosque bears the name of the scholar-companion Abdullah ibn Abbas.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tendrara follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~33.1° N), the plateau altitude and the eastern position give Tendrara prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The open steppe horizon keeps the solar markers sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Tendrara is organised around its central mosque and a few neighbourhood mosques. Here are the most notable.
'Al-Hidaya' means divine guidance. One of the town's main mosques.
'Al-Masjid al-Atiq' ('the old mosque'), one of the town's oldest sanctuaries.
A mosque dedicated to Abdullah ibn Abbas, the Prophet's cousin and a great interpreter of the Quran.
