Geography & context
Tissa (تيسة) is a small town in the hills of the pre-Rif, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Taounate), north of Fès. Located at roughly 34.29° north latitude and 4.66° west longitude, in an agricultural hill zone, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. Famous for its horse moussem and its fantasia, Tissa sees its fairly high latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tissa is renowned for its great annual moussem, one of the most important horse fairs in Morocco, where fantasia displays are held. An agricultural town of the Hayaïna country, it lives to the rhythm of rural markets and livestock. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Tissa
Religious life in Tissa sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the pre-Rif countryside. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and herders. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tissa follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The fairly high latitude (~34.3° N) gives Tissa prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The pre-Rif hills frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
