Geography & context
Moulay Brahim (مولاي إبراهيم) is a mountain village of the High Atlas, in the Marrakech-Safi region (province of Al Haouz), above the Ourika valley and the road to Toubkal. Located at roughly 31.29° north latitude and 7.97° west longitude, clinging to a High Atlas slope, it has a mountain climate: cold winters, cool summers. Famous for the shrine of the saint Moulay Brahim, it is one of the great pilgrimage sites of southern Morocco.
History & religious heritage
Moulay Brahim is built around the mausoleum of the saint who gave it its name, a much-venerated spiritual figure of the High Atlas whose moussem draws many pilgrims each year. Perched on the heights near Asni, the village was badly hit by the Al Haouz earthquake of September 2023. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, marked by a strong tradition of veneration of the saints.
Religious life in Zaouyat My Brahim
Religious life in Moulay Brahim is inseparable from the shrine of its saint and the pilgrimages around it, within the Moroccan Maliki and Sufi tradition. The mausoleum, the mosques and the prayer ground (musalla) set the rhythm of religious life. The Friday prayer and the moussems take on a particular intensity here, carried by the influx of visitors.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Moulay Brahim follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. In the mountains, crescent observation can, on some evenings, be hindered by clouds clinging to the peaks. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mountain altitude and the latitude (~31.3° N) give Moulay Brahim prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The high High Atlas relief surrounding the village advances the impression of the sun setting behind the ridges. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Moulay Brahim is organised around the shrine of its saint and its mosques. Here are some of the most notable places.
