Geography & context
Agdz (أكدز) is a small oasis town in southern Morocco, at the entrance to the Drâa valley, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Zagora). Located at roughly 30.70° north latitude and 6.45° west longitude, at the foot of Jbel Kissane, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: scorching summers, mild winters, the Drâa palm grove. A stop on the road from Ouarzazate to Zagora and near the Tamnougalt kasbah, Agdz sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Agdz is a gateway to the Drâa valley, at the foot of Jbel Kissane, long a stop for the caravans descending towards the desert. The Drâa palm grove and the nearby ksour, such as the famous Tamnougalt kasbah, testify to a rich oasis and caravan past. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Agdz
Religious life in Agdz sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Drâa, carried by the town mosque and the ksour mosques of the palm grove. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents and passing travellers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension, typical of the southern valleys.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Agdz follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~30.7° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Agdz prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Jbel Kissane and the Drâa palm groves frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Agdz is organised around its main mosque and the ksour mosques of the palm grove.
