Geography & context
Foum Zguid (فم زكيد) is a small oasis town in southern Morocco, at the gates of the desert, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Zagora). Located at roughly 30.09° north latitude and 6.87° west longitude, at the edge of the great Saharan expanses, it has an arid climate: scorching summers, mild winters, low rainfall. A departure point towards Lake Iriqui and the dunes, Foum Zguid sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Foum Zguid ('the mouth of Zguid') is a stopover oasis between the Drâa, the Bani and the desert, long tied to the caravans and pastoralism. Its palm grove and its position as a gateway to the great South make it a crossing point towards the Saharan expanses. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh and Hassani setting.
Religious life in Foum Zguid
Religious life in Foum Zguid sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by the town mosque and the surrounding ksour. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents and travellers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension, characteristic of the small towns of the South.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Foum Zguid follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~30.1° N) and the arid climate give Foum Zguid prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The vast desert horizons keep the solar markers very sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
