Geography & context
Goulmima (كلميمة) is an oasis town in south-eastern Morocco, in the Ghéris valley, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Errachidia). Located at roughly 31.69° north latitude and 4.95° west longitude, in a palm grove lined with earthen ksour, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: very hot summers, mild winters. Renowned for its fortified ksour and its oasis, Goulmima sees its relatively low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Goulmima is an old oasis of the Ghéris valley, structured around earthen ksour where Amazigh communities (Ait Morghad) and a large Jewish population lived before the 20th century. The fortified granaries and the palm groves testify to a long tradition of oasis agriculture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Goulmima
Religious life in Goulmima combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Ghéris. The mosques of the town and the ksour set the rhythm of daily life, and the Friday prayer brings together oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the name of the Prophet's companions, such as Othman, or evoke guidance and righteousness.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Goulmima follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The relatively low latitude (~31.7° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Goulmima prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, under strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the east, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
