Geography & context
Er-Rich (الريش) is a small town of the upper Ziz valley, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Midelt), between the High Atlas and the desert. Located at roughly 32.26° north latitude and 4.50° west longitude, at mid-altitude, it has a semi-arid continental climate: cold winters, hot summers. A stopover on the road from Midelt to Errachidia and a gateway to the Ziz gorges, Er-Rich sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Er-Rich is a stopover town of the upper Ziz valley, on the axis that links the Middle Atlas to the Tafilalet and the Sahara. An Amazigh region (Ait Morghad, Ait Haddidou), it long lived from pastoralism and oasis agriculture along the Ziz. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Er-Rich
Religious life in Er-Rich sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, in an Amazigh foothill setting. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life, and the Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Er-Rich follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The fairly high latitude (~32.3° N) and the altitude give Er-Rich prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:35; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the east, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west, and the High Atlas relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
