Geography & context
Erfoud (أرفود) is a town in south-eastern Morocco, in the Tafilalet, at the gates of the desert, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Located at roughly 31.43° north latitude and 4.24° west longitude, in the Ziz palm grove, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: burning summers, mild winters, seasonal sandstorms. A gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes and renowned for its fossil-bearing marble and its dates, Erfoud sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Erfoud developed in the 20th century as an administrative and merchant centre of the Tafilalet, near ancient Sijilmassa and Rissani. A gateway to the great erg and a crossroads towards Merzouga, the town is renowned for its palm groves, its date festival and the extraction of the fossil marble of the surroundings. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Arfoud
Religious life in Erfoud sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Tafilalet, carried by the grand mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents, merchants and travellers on the way to the desert. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke Jerusalem (Al-Qods), peace or benevolence.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Erfoud follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.4° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Erfoud prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:35; in summer, under extreme heat, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:45–22:10 depending on the method. Located in the east of the country, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west, and the desert sky keeps the solar markers sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
