Geography & context
Imilchil (إملشيل) is a high-mountain village of the central High Atlas, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Midelt). Located at roughly 32.15° north latitude and 5.63° west longitude, at over 2,200 metres of altitude on the high Atlas plateaus, it has a high-mountain climate: long, snowy winters, short, cool summers. Famous for its betrothal moussem and for the nearby lakes of Isli and Tislit, Imilchil is a stronghold of the Aït Haddidou Amazigh culture.
History & religious heritage
Imilchil is the heart of the land of the Aït Haddidou, an Amazigh tribe of the high plateaus of the High Atlas. The village is world-famous for its autumn moussem, known as the 'betrothal moussem', and for the legend of the Isli and Tislit lakes, two separated lovers whose tears are said to have formed the lakes. This festive tradition accompanies the great autumn pastoral fairs. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a strongly marked Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Imilchil
Religious life in Imilchil combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh culture of the Aït Haddidou. The village mosque, like those of the neighbouring hamlets, sets the rhythm of daily life on these high plateaus. The Friday prayer brings together herders and villagers, and Ramadan is lived, often in the cold of the altitude, with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Imilchil follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. In the high mountains, crescent observation can, on some evenings, be hindered by clouds clinging to the peaks. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude above 2,200 metres and the latitude (~32.2° N) give Imilchil prayer times with a marked seasonal swing, under a harsh climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:35, often in the snow; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The high peaks surrounding the village clearly advance the impression of the sun setting behind the ridges. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Imilchil is organised around the village mosque and a few hamlet mosques. Here are the most notable.
The village's central mosque, the religious heart of the Aït Haddidou high plateaus.
The mosque of Oudadi, one of the village's places of prayer.
The mosque of Lemcharaa ('timzgida' in Amazigh), in the surroundings of Imilchil.
