Geography & context
Agoudal (أكودال) is one of the highest inhabited villages in Morocco, in the central High Atlas, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, between Imilchil and the Dadès. Located at roughly 32.0° north latitude and 5.6° west longitude, at over 2,300 metres of altitude, it has a high-mountain climate: long, harsh, snowy winters, short, cool summers. An Amazigh village of the Ait Haddidou, Agoudal sees its altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Agoudal is a pastoral village of the high plateaus of the High Atlas, among the highest inhabited localities in the country, on the mountain road linking Imilchil to the Dadès gorges. Life there is set by transhumance and herding. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within the Ait Haddidou Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Agoudal
Religious life in Agoudal sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Amazigh culture of the high plateaus. The village mosque is the heart of community life, in a mountain environment where solidarity is essential. The Friday prayer brings together herders and villagers, and Ramadan is lived, often in intense cold, with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Agoudal follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. In the high mountains, crescent observation can, on some evenings, be hindered by clouds clinging to the peaks. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude above 2,300 metres and the latitude (~32.0° N) give Agoudal prayer times with a marked seasonal swing, under one of the harshest climates in Morocco. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:35, in the snow; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The high peaks surrounding the village clearly advance the impression of sunset. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
