Geography & context
Errachidia (الرشيدية) is a city in south-eastern Morocco, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, set on the banks of the Ziz river, at the gates of the Tafilalet and the Sahara. Located at roughly 31.93° north latitude and 4.42° west longitude, at about 1,060 metres of altitude, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: very hot summers, cool winters, low rainfall. The former 'Ksar es-Souk', Errachidia commands the Ziz valley and its palm groves. Its relatively low latitude limits the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Errachidia, long called Ksar es-Souk, developed in the 20th century as an administrative and military centre commanding the Ziz valley, the natural route towards the Tafilalet and the desert. The neighbouring Tafilalet, cradle of the ruling Alaouite dynasty, gives the region a particular historical depth. The city is today a crossroads towards the Ziz gorges, the palm groves and the Sahara. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Errachidia
Religious life in Errachidia sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of south-eastern Morocco, carried by a network of mosques in the city and the surrounding ksour. The Friday prayer brings together a large crowd, and Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension. Several mosques bear names evoking spiritual values, such as brotherhood or excellence in worship.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Errachidia follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. Under the clear, dry pre-Saharan sky, crescent observation is often made easier. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The relatively low latitude (~31.9° N) and the altitude of about 1,060 metres give Errachidia prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under a climate of contrasts. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, under strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:45–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the east of the country, the city has an earlier sunrise and sunset than the west of Morocco, and the clear pre-Saharan sky keeps the solar markers sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Errachidia has many mosques, in the city and the ksour of the Ziz valley. Here are some of the most notable.
