Geography & context
Kors (قرس) is a small rural locality of south-eastern Morocco, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, on the edges of the High Atlas and the oasis valleys of the Dadès and the Todgha. Located in a mountain and pre-Saharan foothill zone, at mid-altitude, it has a semi-arid continental climate: cool winters, hot, dry summers. A small Amazigh village away from the main routes, Kors lives to the rhythm of mountain agriculture and livestock.
History & religious heritage
Kors is an Amazigh locality on the edges of the High Atlas and the south-eastern valleys, whose life long rested on pastoralism and oasis agriculture. Like many villages of the region, it keeps a traditional earthen habitat. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Kors
Religious life in Kors sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Amazigh identity of the Atlas valleys. The village mosque is the heart of community life, gathering residents for the daily and Friday prayers. Ramadan keeps a strong family and solidarity dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Kors follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The relatively low latitude (~31.5° N) and the foothill altitude give Kors prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed late at night and Maghrib in the late afternoon; in summer, Fajr is early and Isha later. Located in the east of the country, the locality has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west. The switch to standard time during Ramadan shifts all the times by about an hour. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
