Geography & context
Rissani (الريصاني) is a historic town in south-eastern Morocco, at the heart of the Tafilalet, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Located at roughly 31.28° north latitude and 4.26° west longitude, in the great Tafilalet palm grove at the gates of the Sahara, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: burning summers, mild winters, date-palm oases. Heir to the ancient Sijilmassa and the cradle of the ruling Alaouite dynasty, Rissani is a landmark of Moroccan history.
History & religious heritage
Rissani is built near the ruins of Sijilmassa, a great caravan city founded in the 8th century, which was for centuries a hub of the trans-Saharan trade in gold and salt. The Tafilalet is also the cradle of the Alaouite dynasty, which has ruled Morocco since the 17th century: Rissani is home to the mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the dynasty's founding ancestor. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, in a setting steeped in history.
Religious life in Rissani
Religious life in Rissani is deeply marked by the memory of Sijilmassa and by the religious prestige of the Tafilalet, the land from which the ruling family came. The mausoleum of Moulay Ali Cherif, the grand mosque and the ksour mosques set the rhythm of religious life, in the Maliki tradition. The Friday prayer and Ramadan take on a particular intensity here, carried by this heritage.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Rissani follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.3° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Rissani prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:35; in summer, under extreme heat, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:45–22:10 depending on the method. Located in the east of the country, the town has an earlier sunrise and sunset than the west, and the desert sky keeps the solar markers very sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
