Geography & context
Tinejdad (تنجداد) is an oasis town in south-eastern Morocco, in the Ferkla region, within the Drâa-Tafilalet region (province of Errachidia). Located at roughly 31.51° north latitude and 5.02° west longitude, along a palm grove dotted with ksour, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: very hot summers, mild winters. Renowned for its earthen ksour (such as El Khorbat) and its Ferkla oasis, Tinejdad sees its relatively low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Tinejdad is the centre of the Ferkla oasis, a string of palm groves and fortified villages (ksour) inhabited by Amazigh communities, including the Ait Atta. Its earthen ksour, such as El Khorbat — today a museum — testify to a rich oasis heritage. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Tinejdad
Religious life in Tinejdad combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Ferkla. The mosques of the town and the ksour set the rhythm of daily life, several bearing Amazigh names. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke faithfulness, concord or the march.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tinejdad follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The relatively low latitude (~31.5° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Tinejdad prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, under strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:25 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the east, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
