Geography & context
Zagora (زاكورة) is a town in southern Morocco, the heart of the Drâa valley, in the Drâa-Tafilalet region. Located at roughly 30.33° north latitude and 5.84° west longitude, at about 730 metres of altitude at the gates of the desert, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: scorching summers, mild winters, palm groves irrigated by the Drâa. Famous for its 'Timbuktu 52 days' sign evoking the trans-Saharan caravans, Zagora sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Zagora is a crossroads town of the Drâa valley, long a stop for the caravans that linked Morocco to the Sahel and Timbuktu by the desert tracks. Overlooked by Jbel Zagora, the town and its earthen ksour keep the memory of this caravan past and of oasis culture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Amazigh and Hassani setting.
Religious life in Zagora
Religious life in Zagora sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Drâa, carried by the mosques of the town and the ksour of the palm grove. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents, merchants and travellers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear names tied to the Drâa or evoke light and unity.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Zagora follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~30.3° N) and the altitude of about 730 metres give Zagora prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under a very hot climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, under intense heat, Fajr falls around 04:45 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The clear pre-Saharan sky keeps the solar markers sharp over the palm grove. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
